April 1687, Versailles Orangery More than a thousand Mediterranean trees shelter the cathedral-like galleries of the Orangery. Built by the King’s architect to impress courtiers, the tree-lined space became a theatrical stage for entertaining the Court. Inside, gardeners lit bonfires to keep the trees warm, so that when the Sun King visited, the heady scent of firewood mixed with that of his beloved orange blossoms gave off a generous golden aura.
