MAXIMALIST MAKEUP IS BACK
Maximalist makeup is back , the party of color is back, and the big eyeshadow palettes are back to experiment, enjoy and play with our eyes and a brush. We're not the ones saying it (although Urban Decay's Mucho Happy Mini could very well be giving us clues), but the London creative studio The Digital Fairy is saying it on their TikTok account and a good handful of the most trend-setting fashion shows.
After several seasons of brands teaching us to properly prepare our skin, to apply primer, foundation and concealer and then seal them ; to add a little eyeliner; an ochre-toned shadow to amplify our gaze; a subtle and effective highlighter; a very natural blush and a plump lip gloss… it's time to take that clean face and give it a little sugar!
It's true that we had already started buying individual eyeshadows (how fantastic the Eyeshadow Shimmer Powder by Bellapierre is !), thinking of settling down on a single look . But it's no less true that deep down we always dream of giving free rein to our creativity again with the unlimited options of the maxi palettes (without leaving Bellapierre, pay attention to the mixtape spirit that it gives us) . 90's Glam ). Or not?
Four years ago, “people were more focused on skincare at home and, frankly, no one was putting much effort into developing a full makeup look,” makeup artist Nikki DeRoest, who has lent her brushes to stars such as Phoebe Dynevor, Emma Corrin and Amber Valletta, recently told Who What Wear . However, “I think she is now becoming more adventurous and broadening her creative horizons through makeup . It’s time to bring back the best tricks for an exciting and daring look.”
In the absence of new episodes of Euphoria to whet our appetites (and, let’s face it, to draw inspiration from), all the media insist in unison: “ We’re tired of playing it safe .” That’s precisely the phrase that Stylist magazine used to title a report to the greater glory of aesthetic maximalism. In other words: about strong eye shadows that ignore the natural limits of the eyelid, combined with each other and with the vocation of experimental work. The goal? To make people turn to look at you in the eyes on the street. You can start with the divine Chiara Ferragni palettes .
The game that makeup artists are proposing this season (don't worry, it's very simple and you can do it at home) is to put aside the boring routines of everyday life, grab a palette of shadows and play with several colors at once, with no greater ambition than to see what comes out. Delete. Repeat. Enjoy. If last February Pat McGrath had us all searching for the secret of the doll-like skin that the models had at the Maison Margiela Artisanal haute couture show... how can you not lose your fear of mixing two colors with a brush?
Prefer to play it safe and get some tips on where to start? No problem, check out the Noir Kei Nonomiya and Loewe shows (although you may have to tone down the metallic effusiveness of their offerings a bit), From Dries Van Noten (learn from the masters how to mix two colours to make a classic make-up look fiercely contemporary) or Ganni (perhaps the most affordable version: the perfect balance between risk and tradition). Think about what they have done, stand in front of the mirror and start turning your most maximalist dreams into reality.
