Bakuchiol and Pregnancy While topical application of vitamin A in skincare hasn’t been shown to cause problems during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as very little of it is absorbed by the body through the skin, doctors (and Medik8) recommend avoiding it, just in case, due to known risks of ingesting high doses of vitamin A. Bakuchiol, on the other hand, has been shown to have similar effects to retinol but doesn’t have the same mechanism of action as vitamin A, so there’s no real reason to link the two. We can’t find any documented evidence as to why Bakuchiol should be avoided during pregnancy, and we’d happily recommend it on that basis. Many experts, including doctors and other brands, claim that bakuchiol is perfectly safe during pregnancy. Since most cosmetic ingredients have not been tested on pregnant women, there is no way to definitively say that something is specifically "pregnancy safe," so we do not boldly declare "pregnancy safe."
